Outfitting the Hussar

Return to the 7eme Hussards home page

Napoleon regarded the Hussars as the elite of his light cavalry.  The uniform traditions followed the origins of the Hussars from the light horsemen of 15th Century Hungary.  This uniform was the height of military fashion in the Napoleonic period.  Its color, cut, and uniqueness attracted attention wherever the hussar went.  This uniform is termed "a la Hongroise," meaning in the Hungarian fashion.  It consists of number of distinctive modes of dress worn in different seasons and situations.  Each regiment of Napoleon's Hussars was uniformed in different color schemes - of the 14 regiments, no two appeared the same.

The kit for the 7eme Hussards, our Tenue des Hussards (under development), depicts our regiment in 1806 when we were members of the infamous Brigade Infernale commanded by Napoleon's premier commander of light cavalry, General Lasalle.  For our impressions, we use a basic kit consisting of a number of essential uniform, tack, arms and equipment items.  These kit items can be assembled to portray the uniforms historically used by the 7eme Hussards during this period.

The basic kit provides the essential items needed to construct the essential impressions and consists of:

Harnachement (tack) are required for our impression.  While the uniform, arms and armor present a striking appearance, we are a mounted unit - your horse and tack are essential kit items.

  • Selle - saddle

  • Portrail - breaststrap

  • Portmanteau - valise with straps and buckles

  • Shabraque - sheepskin saddle blanket

  • Surfaix - surcingle

  • Bride - headstall

To round out our impression, a variety of additional items are appropriate and will be essential to our historically authentic impression.

  • Manteau - three-quarters cloak

  • Veste d' Ecurie - stable jacket

  • Pantalon d' Ecurie - stable trousers

  • Sabots - clogs

  • Chapeau - bicorne hat

  • Pistolet de Cavalerie - cavalry pistol

Acquiring the clothing, tack, arms and equipment is no more expensive than any other up-scale avocation.  Cost of the kit approximates what an equestrian enthusiast typically spends annually on stable board and maintenance for one horse in Maryland.
