The portmanteau is a cylindrical shaped velisse used to carry soldier's supplies on campaign.  It is always affixed to the cantle of the saddle by three black leather straps.  Our portmanteau is made from forest green wool and leather.  It has a yellow lace numeral "7" centered within a circle of yellow lace.
